In a conversation with someone there is a give and take which involves both speaking and listening. God hears us as we speak to him and would never waste any of our prayers. We may, at times, think he is not listening as we may not see his answer right away or even want the answer he gives us. However, when we look back on our lives, we realize he was listening, and we see he did answer with exactly what we needed at the time.
Most times we just do a lot of talking to God. Talking to God is good. But are you also listening to God? He is always nudging us, always trying to get our attention. Is your heart open to hearing him? Unless we are listening, we may be missing God communicating with us.
So how do you listen to God and how do you know if you are hearing him? You have to find some time to be quiet. Choose a quiet time that will work for you. If your life is never still, ask God to show you when and where. During the crazy-busy time of my life, I could not find the time or the quiet. God had to teach me to be silent and to listen, and if you ask, he will teach you too.
Over time, I learned to get up 30 minutes earlier in the morning before the chaos and distractions began. This worked for me and helped to set my day before I left the house. Ask God to schedule a time to be with him. He will arrange that time for you, what is best for you and your path.
God communicates with us in various ways, and he will teach you many things. You may hear him as you read words in scripture, trying to still your mind, or just sitting quietly with him. He may be talking to you through things you read or hear, places you go, from people who speak to you, or you to them. You may also see his wisdom in music or art. Our God is creative and clever. Open your heart and fine tune your listening to what he may be bringing to you along your path.
The more you come to him in silence, the more you will know how to hear him, and to listen in the quiet of your heart. As you strive to hear him, the more you will find our faithful God will give back to you with so much more than you can imagine.
So, spend a few minutes today asking God to arrange that time for you.
